GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: Despite concerns about timing, Utah lawmakers are moving ahead with a bill designating the Browning 1911 pistol as the official state gun.
It seems the inventor, John M. Browning, a Utah native born on Jan. 23, 1855, is a revered figure whose work is deemed worthy of a lasting tribute. His company is still headquartered in Utah. "This pistol is Utah," state Rep. Carl Wimmer, sponsor of the firearms bill, told the Deseret News. "Its history is emblazoned on our state."
Wimmer's bill sailed through the Political Subdivisions Committee earlier this week and is set for debate in the Utah House. The 100-year-old semi-automatic weapon has been widely used by the military, a source of pride to supporters of the resolution. (read full report)
