GCIS INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING: U.S. Hits Iranian Officials With Sanctions Over Rights Abuses

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: The U.S. Treasury has slapped sanctions on the head of Iran's Basij militia and Tehran's chief prosecutor for human rights abuses in their country.

In a statement, the Treasury said the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Basij forces, Mohammad Reza Naqdi, and Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi were added to its Office of Foreign Assets Control blacklist.

The action subjects the two to visa sanctions, seeks to block any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction, and bans U.S. citizens from financial transactions with them. (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: Amnesty International has urged the Mexican authorities to investigate the whereabouts of three relatives of a murdered human rights activist who were abducted this week.

The abductions follow the killing of activist Josefina Reyes by unidentified gunmen in January 2010. Her brother Rubén Reyes was also shot dead last year.

Their sister Malena Reyes, brother Elías Reyes and Elías' wife Luisa Ornelas were kidnapped by armed men east of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua state, on Monday.

"We are gravely worried that Malena, Elías and Luisa are at risk of suffering the same fate as Ruben and Josefina Reyes, who appears to have been killed for daring to speak out against the explosion of violence in Mexico," said Rupert Knox, Mexico researcher at Amnesty International. GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: THE OLYMPICS will make London a "magnet" for human trafficking unless ministers launch an urgent crackdown, shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper warned today.

Criminal gangs will use next year's Games to force women and girls into the sex trade and push men into forced labour, Ms Cooper said.

She called on the Government to learn the lessons of the Athens Games in 2004, saying the number of human trafficking victims doubled due to poor prevention efforts.

In a speech to the Stopping Traffick conference, she said: "There are fears that the London 2012 Olympics could increase the trafficking of vulnerable people into the UK.

"Studies worldwide show that international sporting events, where people move across borders, are used by criminals under the cover of tourism to exploit women and children. The Government must wake up to the risk that traffickers will seek to profit from the 2012 Games and take action to make sure this event does not make the situation worse." (read full report)
